This is an example of an embedded video. You can embed video from any online source that will allow it (such as YouTube, Vimeo etc). The thumbnail on the home page is generated by uploading a screen grab and just saving, but not inserting it into the post.

This is an example of the SmoothGallery plugin. Simply upload your images to a gallery and they will appear as a slideshow. The pictures tab at the top of the gallery shows dynamically generated thumbnails of all your images. The gallery is customisable via the custom fields in the post page.
